The Boston Athenaeum was the cultural center of Boston in the first half of the 19th century. In 1827, the Athenaeum opened a dedicated art gallery to display the works of Boston artists. Gerry exhibited his first painting in the Athenaeum’s Art Gallery in 1833. Over the course of his life, he would show more than 40 paintings there.
