Gerry and his partner James Burt worked together in Boston as sign and ornamental painters for five years, between 1834 and 1839. Although Gerry is not known to have received any formal artistic training, Burt had served an apprenticeship with an ornamental painter named William Redding, whom they succeeded in business.
