Gerry took three extended trips to Europe during his lifetime, a requisite for any serious artist of the time. During this first sojourn in Europe, he was struck by ancient Roman ruins, so unlike anything found in the United States. Gerry probably drew this sketch of the Claudian Aqueduct while in Rome in 1850 and later used it to create the painting Claudian Aqueduct near Rome in his studio after returning to America.
