Claudian Aqueduct near Rome
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed and dated, lower right on two rocks: “S. L. Gerry / 1858”
Oil on canvas (18 x 26 in.)
Collection of Charles and Gloria Vogel

Gerry later wrote of visiting the Claudian Aqueduct, “one could look for miles over the valley between Rome and the Apennines and face the lines of ruined aqueduct which once brought the pure water from the mountains to the city. There is something very impressive in these leagues of masonry.”
