The young artists, Gerry and his partner James Burt, chose an area of Boston known as Cornhill for their ornamental painting business when they opened their doors in 1834. It was a bustling location, situated near marketplaces and home to publishers and booksellers. The eye-catching sign of a Highlander and a deer that denoted their office likely helped distinguish Gerry and Burt’s partnership from the other businesses on the street.
