Eagle Cliff and Echo Lake
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower left: “S L Gerry”; undated, circa 1880
Oil on canvas, on board (12 x 20 in.)
Private collection

Gerry often featured people and, in his later work, specifically tourists in his paintings. He composed his pieces so that the tourists shared the canvas with the natural world. They were as much a part of the scene as the sights they were viewing.
