Mount Washington and the Ellis River from Jackson
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower right: “Gerry”; undated
Oil on canvas (32 x 52 in.)
Collection of John J. and Joan R. Henderson

Gerry painted Mount Washington from the north, south, east, west, and points in between. Depending on his viewpoint at a particular time, his depiction of the majestic peak often incorporated one of the rivers that had their origins on its slopes, including the Androscoggin, Saco, Pemigewasset, and Ellis. Gerry’s prodigious output of paintings, preserved today by museums and private collectors, offers a glimpse of New Hampshire that is familiar yet just beyond our ken.
