The Life and Art of

Fording the Stream, Franconia Mountains
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower left: “S. L. Gerry. 1857”
Oil on canvas (20 x 30 in.)
Collection of P. Andrews and Linda H. McLane

Sales and exhibitions of Gerry’s work helped foster a growing interest in White Mountain tourism, while celebrating the pristine beauty of the state. Like his peers, he exhibited paintings that introduced the public to the stunning natural beauty of New Hampshire. An early label on the back of this painting suggests that it may have been called View on the Pemigewasset at Thornton, N.H., which Gerry exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum in 1857.
