Horseback Riding in the White Mountains
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower left: “S L Gerry”; undated
Oil on board (9 3/4 x 7 1/2 in.)
Collection of Paul and Kathy Kossey

In order to reach remote sites in the White Mountains, artists and tourists had to either walk or rely on horses, or in some cases, burros. This piece appears to be an oil sketch for a related painting, Scene with Three Mounted Figures. Gerry was adept at depicting a variety of animals including horses, cattle, and dogs, which appeared throughout his works.
