Head Waters of the Peabody River
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower right: “S L Gerry”; pencil inscription on reverse: “Head waters of / Peabody river / S. L. Gerry”; undated, circa 1876
Oil on artist board (12 x 10 in.)
Collection of P. Andrews and Linda H. McLane

This piece is probably the painting called Head Waters / Peabody River that was listed as number 45 in the catalog of a Williams and Everett sale in November 1875. The Peabody River is a tributary of the Androscoggin, flowing north through Pinkham Notch. Its headwaters include the Emerald Pool, also pictured here. Gerry stayed almost the entire painting season that year in nearby Jackson.
