Land of Beulah, or Vision of the City of Heaven
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower right: “Samuel Gerry”; undated, circa 1868–69
Oil on canvas (37 x 62 in.)
Collection of Arthur and Catherine McKinley

Several of Gerry’s works that were popular with critics and general audiences were based on literary or religious writings. This scene, from John Bunyon’s 17th-century allegory Pilgrim’s Progress, pictures the approach to the “Celestial City.” In Biblical Hebrew, Beulah refers to the “Lord’s country.” Gerry exhibited The Land of Beulah at both the Boston Athenaeum and the National Academy of Design in 1869.
