The Life and Art of

Untitled
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower right: “S L Gerry”; undated, probably 1880s
Watercolor on paper (17 1/4 x 35 1/4 in., framed)
Collection of Charles and Gloria Vogel

This untitled rural genre scene was probably painted in the last decade of Gerry’s life, when he was trying his hand at watercolor painting. The subject is similar to that of an oil painting called The Pasture Gate, which he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1870. That painting, picturing cows rather than mostly sheep, was highly praised at the time, yet its present whereabouts are unknown.
