Gerry spent much of his career in the White Mountains, where in pencil, watercolors, and oils he captured the grandeur and beauty of the region on paper and canvas, much like the artist depicted here under the white umbrella. Like his peers, he exhibited paintings throughout the Northeast, introducing the public to the stunning natural beauty of New Hampshire. This picturesque scene, located just south of North Conway village, was frequently painted by White Mountain artists. Artist’s Brook was attributed to Asher B. Durand when the Toledo Museum of Art purchased it in 1947. After much investigation, and comparison with other Durand and Gerry paintings, the curators reattributed this work to Gerry in 1979. A very similar painting at the Currier Museum of Art, signed by Gerry, provides the basis for Artist’s Brook’s tentative date.
