Eagle Cliff, Profile Lake
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower right: “S L Gerry”; undated
Charcoal on paper (30 x 21 1/2 in., framed)
Private collection

This drawing is the basis for the attribution of Gerry’s Eagle Cliff, Profile Lake painting. The fact that it is executed in charcoal and chalk rather than ink or pencil helps date this pair of images to after 1875. It was during the last decades of his life that Gerry began to favor this more painterly medium. He also tended increasingly to create vertical as opposed to horizontal images.
