Belle
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Signed, lower right: “S L Gerry”; undated, probably 1880s
Charcoal on paper (29 x 21 in., framed)
Collection of Charles and Gloria Vogel

A great number of grazing and watering cows appear in Gerry’s landscapes and genre paintings. In fact, he drew, painted, and even exhibited a series of what he described as cows’ heads and cow studies in paintings with titles like Cattle Feeding, Lily Pool and Cattle, Heads of Animals, Cows in Early Summer, and Cattle en Route. Gerry’s name for the painting shown here is unknown. The name Belle was applied only recently to the appealing animal.
