The seaside as well as the mountains attracted Gerry and his fellow landscape painters. Although the location of this early work has not been identified, Gerry is known to have sketched along the North Shore in Massachusetts and as far north as Mount Desert Island in Maine. Gerry painted only a handful of ocean scenes during his career, making this seascape all the more unusual for him.
