Old Road to Meredith, N.H.
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Inscribed on stretcher: “Painted by S L Gerry / Old road to Meredith, N.H.” and “November 10th 1859”
Oil on canvas (12 x 9 in.)
Collection of John J. and Joan R. Henderson

Between 1853 and 1856 Gerry had a summer home in the village of Center Harbor, located on what the deeds called “the old road from Center Harbor village to Meredith Village.” This scene offers a glimpse of Lake Winnipesaukee in 1859 from the hill above what had been Gerry’s house a few years earlier. Although he and his family summered there for just three years, he painted scenic vistas in that vicinity both before and after his time as a resident.
