In the popular 1859 guide, The White Hills, the Rev. Thomas Starr King wrote of the view from this very location, describing it as “the most enchanting scene of the kind which this valley [the Pemigewasset] and that of the Saco can offer.” It is possible that this painting is the one called Starr King View, West Campton, N.H., that Gerry exhibited at the Boston Art Club in 1877, or else one similar.
