Profile Lake, Franconia, N.H.
Samuel L. Gerry (1813–91)
Inscribed in pencil on reverse: “Franconia Notch / N.H./ By Samuel L. Gerry”; undated
Oil on canvas (16 1/4 x 20 1/4 in.)
Collection of Robert O. and Jill C. Wilson

In this painting of Profile Lake, Gerry depicts not just the majestic beauty of nature but also the gentrification that tourism brought to the region. By the 1870s places that had been difficult to reach in the early decades of the 19th century could be easily accessed and viewed, sometimes from the relative comfort of a boat.
